Area/Perimeter robots - get the children to draw robots and write the area and perimeter of each section (Sally Maddison) Or. you could give them an area and perimeter and have them design their own robot within the criteria. Sally Maddison's students design robots and calculate the area and perimeter. I love the creativity for ALL students. The area and perimeter calculations are good for lower and average students, but won't engage top students. In this case I think that's okay. I don't want to give top students an activity that looks different from their peers. If you do whisper a word - make it "joints." Don't elaborate - except to say that the robots in any pose must always be aligned to the graph paper.

The 3rd grade Common Core standards are pushing us to reach a deeper understanding of many topics. For example, area is covered in much more depth than our previous state standards specified. I've always done a "Dream House" project to help students learn area concepts, and this year I've adapted it to address the following standard: CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.C.7d Recognize area as additive. Find areas of rectilinear figures by decomposing them into non-overlapping rectangles and adding the…

The timing was perfect as I was missing 5 students for early spring break starters–so it seemed like a great plan for a Friday before break! Area and Perimeter Problem […]

40 Maps They Didn’t Teach You In School

By the time we graduate high school, we learn that they never taught us the most interesting things in there. Sure, you might be able to name the European countries or point New York on the map, but does that give a you real understanding of how the world functions? To fill this gap, we have gathered a great and informative selection of infographical maps that will teach you things like most popular sports in different countries, who has the largest breasts, red hair map of Europe, world’s…
