Fluency is the ability to read the majority of words, accurately and quickly, with the appropriate expression. There are three components of fluency; accuracy, speed and prosody. Being able to fluently read is linked to reading comprehension because the reader is able to focus on the meaning of the text rather than decoding. By modeling and providing multiple opportunities for children to practice reading, such as reader’s theater and frequent read alouds, they can become more fluent readers.
    UNDERSTANDING: Fluency is the ability to read most words in context quickly and accurately and with appropriate expression. Chapter 4 provides an overview on reading fluency and how to provide students with an in depth and effective fluency program. In order for students to becoming avid and enthusiastic readers who get pleasure and information from reading they must first develop fluency.

They learn that memorization of text is not necessary and there are a variety of ways to gain fluency and expression. When reading speed increases, word recognition errors decrease and with each additional reread student reading speed increases further.

Running records are a formative assessment and information gathered from them should be used to guide instruction. Running records are reliable, objective and comprehensive.
