Being able to make appropriate predictions before reading, making connections (text to text, text to self, text to world), and continuously engaging in self-monitoring are all part of reading comprehension strategies. It is significant for teachers to model, teach & encourage effective comprehension strategies by supporting students become more proficient and independent readers (BLD, 2018).

The activity is engaging and challenging for advanced students. The task requires them to understand the messages behind the author’s text. This teacher believes that students need to recognize the author’s back-story when reading any text that they come across. This activity is effective & useful because it requires students to use their own personal background knowledge to understand various forms of text.

This activity has useful components. Students listen to a read-aloud & then infer, predict, ask questions & determine what they want to do next. In this classroom, students chose to make a personalized weather forecast for their community. This encouraged students to understand the text & take it in the direction that they wanted to (e.g., in this class they wrote a persuasive piece). This activity is useful & effective because it promotes deep thinking & requires comprehension of text.

In section five of this resource. It gives a thorough explanation of comprehension instruction. The most interesting fact on this topic is the crucial role comprehension plays in reading. If students do not understand what they read, then they are missing a significant part and the task loses purpose. I recommend this resource because it has lots of information on why comprehension is important and it supports it with research in addition to teaching strategies.

Assessment

This activity requires students to write the “thoughts” that their characters in the books have. The purpose of this activity is to build comprehension skills & promote deeper thinking. An assessment that could be done with this activity is that the teacher could determine whether or not the students were able to express what their characters were thinking when performing a task. This is effective & useful because it promotes creativity & gives opportunities for comprehension assessment.

This activity requires students to listen to a story. The teacher stops in the middle of the book & asks students to make a prediction. As assessment, the teacher could circulate in the class while the students are writing their predictions. The teacher could take anecdotal notes on how the predictions are being done (i.e., how do their sentences start). This is effective because the students need to make relevant predictions that show their understanding of the text.
