As I was originally working out this piece, ‘Globe Trotter’, the phrase ‘Trojan Horse,’ popped into my head. Humm, I thought, the threat hidden within. This was followed quickly by the name Pandora. Pandora is a figure from Greek mythology who opened a jar, inadvertently releasing all of the evils into the world. “Pandora’s Trojan Horse” seemed like a perfect analogy to what was going on with Global Warming, and Climate Change.
Global Warming Sucks
The issue of Global Warming is alarming. The Inuit who live in the northern most inhabited stretches of Canada have been noticing a gradual warming of the climate and thinning ice in the Arctic for decades. This has more recently been on an accelerated trajectory, with open water appearing earlier in the spring, and in places where it has not been ice free before. Southern animals such as bees and grizzly bears are being seen for the first time in northern latitudes.
Everybody is a unique individual, no two people in the world are exactly the same. We should celebrate our differences, and not use them to wedge people apart. No matter what our race, religion, sexual orientation, abilities, or even our politics are, the world would be a better place if we all treated each other with respect. Children are not born thinking, only people that are the same as me are good, a young child will happily play with anybody at all.
I was watching the news one night, and a story came on about a problem that was occurring in this neighborhood. Small items were going missing, part of a swim suit, a sock, small toys. The whole neighborhood was falling victim to these crimes, except one lawn which was becoming littered with these items. It was finally decided to set up a night vision camera. What followed was hilarious footage of a cat carrying numerous items, and in some cases dragging things so big it couldn’t walk…
Our beautiful border collie is nearly 8 years old, and still a bundle of energy and fun. In the summer people drive by with the windows rolled down, and we can hear them laughing at our dog’s antics. If he can find anything that by any stretch of the imagination could possibly be turned into a game, he is right on top of it. Catching snowballs is one of his favorite wintertime sports.
Bird on a Wire
I noticed some birds hanging out on the wires near my house one day, which became the germination point for this piece. When we lived in the Maritimes I often noticed in the fall, birds descending on any berries left in the trees or bushes. As it got later into the fall the berries sometimes became fermented, and you could sometimes see the birds staggering about on the wires, or perched at odd angles.
Tiger with Spots
Given that I have painted zebras with spots (several times), and cheetahs with stripes, the idea of a tiger with spots amused me. I have this wonderful thing called ‘Artistic Licence’ and I definitely enjoy not always following the rules.
You are being Watched
This serigraph is inspired from more than one direction, the most pleasant being the truly awesome animal documentaries you can see now, with the help of animal tracking devices. The darker side of the same coin, is all of the human tracking devices that are around today. I almost always dislike those, except when someone commits a terrible crime. Then it is handy to have a mug shot of the animal, so that they can be tracked and held to account for their actions.
Speaking Truth to Power
There really should be only one truth, but unfortunately black and white issues are becoming shades of gray, depending on the vantage point of the viewer. To some extent powerful people have always exerted their influence over what is truth, but in the age of social media it should be easier to hold people to account. Fake news sadly has tossed a monkey wrench into the cogs of that wheel. I hope in the end truth will win out, what a wonderful world that would be.
Fledglings preparing to leave Home
This stage, past childhood and nearly adult, is the age of my children while I worked on this serigraph. Still coming back to the family home for the summer, but making a separate life for themselves while away at university. Sad to let go, excited and hopeful for what the future holds.
Okay every once in a while I just want to have fun. These really ticked off chickens, roosters, cocks, whatever you want to call them, are a play on the game called Angry Birds. I have never actually had enough spare time, nor the desire to play the game, but it certainly permeated our culture for a while.
Would they have been Friends
This is my wonderfully amazing first Border Collie Laika as a pup, and my absolutely lovely second Border Collie Varney, who was still a pup when I created this. Laika was far more interested in his people, and cars, than he ever was in other people, or even other dogs. Varney loves his people, but he is also very interested in other dogs and really loves to play with them. I think Varney with his charm offensive, would have won Laika over if they had met.
Phew It's Getting Warm
Penguins are amazing creatures who have adapted to living, and raising their chicks in some of the most inhospitable places on the planet. The penguin parents take turns swimming from their breeding grounds, south to the ‘Antarctic Polar Front’ to feed themselves, and bring back food for their young. This journey roundtrip can take 7 to 10 days.
