Stomp Style - This Lesson Stinks
‘This Lesson Stinks’ is an instrumental piece that incorporates four unique sections. Bethany’s ‘Stomp style’ activities utilise the body and mind. They make use of the whole person. This means that music like this can happen anywhere and at any time, particularly when conventional instruments are not available or required. We hope you’ve enjoyed this musical journey with Bethany, and we hope these lessons have expanded your horizons while you look at the road ahead!

Stomp Style - The Road Rules
There are many rules in life. Music also holds a variety of rules about how music should be taught and what students should be offered. The challenge is to form rules for the particular students you, as teacher, are engaging with at that particular point in time. Bethany uses this activity to explore some of the rules of the road that we encounter. This reminds us to observe what the students are doing with the musical material because it informs how we should offer the next learning experience.

Stomp Style - Take That!
Hey you, take that! Feel the music in your body! There are many situations where the learner needs to take the songs and material that is offered by the teacher. Throughout the process, the student should have the opportunity to work musically in many different ways. This will allow the music to connect with the students via all the senses. Bethany will help you and your students experience all of the parts of this activity, and explore the various structures.

Stomp Style - Rain Play
The movement of rain is so alive as it dances down windowpanes and drains. It is such a useful theme for students as we all encounter the sensation of rain. A variety of different sound qualities live in the motion of rain, from the roar of thunder to the first delicate drop. In this activity, Bethany begins with the exploration of rain sounds, listening to the rhyme, playing with the words, transferring the rhythm to the body, and later shifting ideas to musical instruments.

Stomp Style - The Chase
Chasing down appropriate activities is an important part of music education. Always ask what the students need in terms of their educational, social, cognitive, emotional and development state. Bethany chased down an activity that could serve as a body break, unite the class, and instruct the students on safety protocols in a light-hearted way. The activity was about chasing bugs away and seemed appropriate when I needed a rhyme whilst teaching in the virtual or spaced classroom.

Stomp Style - Something Great
Something great happens each and every day. Sometimes a great thing happens to us and sometimes it happens to someone else. We just need to be observant. Bethany’s ‘Something Great’ touches on the notion that music is fun and that engaging with it is a great thing to do. You and your students will have opportunities for improvisation or creative moments. It might just be setting who is going when and having cues for entries.

Stomp Style - Body Break
The body is designed to be in motion. Giving students a regular ‘body break’, supports their capacity to re-energise their physical selves as more oxygen is supplied to their muscles; re-focuses their minds as they listen and respond to musical sequences; and re-connects their ability to attend to new learning. Bethany has designed ‘Body Break’ to offer the students a break in their regular schedule. Student will listen and copy, explore new patterns, practice the rhymes, and more!

Stomp Style - Stamp, Clap, Clap
Music educators primarily work with the following body percussion: Snap or click of the fingers, Clap of the hands, Patsch or knee-tapping, Stamp or stomp of the feet. The examples offered by this approach expose the student to these four body movements and the four sounds which can be easily transferred to form instrumental pieces. In this activity, Bethany highlights the basic body percussion movements – stamp, patsch, clap and snap!
