Deep Bedding and Deep Litter Method in Cold Climates
If you have done any research into keeping poultry and other animals, the use of deep bedding as made popular by Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms is sure to come up along with other influencers who mimick the method. Although I can not disagree with the principles of deep litter and deep litter method, I feel they are forgetting one key component for cold climate dwellers, extreme cold air temperature and its influence on the success of the method.

In my persuit of being able to hatch my own meat bird chicks and laying hen chicks, I have been using my new incubator for hatching chicken eggs. The success has been dismal for the first two hatches, but I finally think I figured it out and ended up with a reasonable hatching success. It has certainly not been without its disappointments. I have always raised laying and broiler chickens in fixed housing because I always thought it to be easier. And although they do get grass as I bring the grass to the birds, I do have to clean their pens. So this year, I am going to try using a moveable chicken coop AKA chicken tractor that I build myself to house some pasture raised chicken. And it only cost me about $115.00 CDN.
