Demolition of historic buildings begins in Brantford

Brantford, Ontario, Canada—And the walls came tumbling down. Barely a dozen hours after city council voted to demolish a strip of 41 historic but deteriorated downtown buildings, the steel teeth of a huge excavating machine began tearing into the walls.

I remember the openness of downtown before that deadbeat monstrosity was built. A never-before published photo of Brantford's Market Square taken on May 15, 1985. It was the last look at the property (used for 20 years as a parking lot) before the Campeau company began construction of the Eaton Mall. The photo was taken from the heights of the Beckett Building on Colborne Street. (Expositor file photo)

A 1980 view of Market Square in its days as a parking lot. Note one of Brantford's famous chip wagons in the lower right corner.

Who allows a downtown to get like this? I am ashamed to say this is my hometown. Brantford used to have a thriving beautiful downtown core. Very depressing and still for the most part is.
