Colourful India.

One of the nice things I can do through my blog is not only share photographs but experiences as well. Although I don't share every detail of my life here I do let you get to know me, my environment and my family. Now we are in India where my wife is from visiting family and to attend a wedding. We also have a house here that we built on her land where she grew up. Now one thing about this country is that it is very colourful. From the clothes to the buildings to the insects. I found this…

Day 500 and counting.

Today I reached 500 consecutive days of taking at least one photo. There have been struggles, some great shots, some not so inspired shots. Yet I have reached this milestone and I am very happy with doing so. I will keep doing it as long as I can and will let it run until something prevents me from doing so. I shot these first two images at my brothers house and processed them both in Snapseed. Other then the conversion and cropping their was very little post production in the first one, my…

Trying to stay on the positive side.

I have been around the photography scene for about 40 years now having picked up the bug at a young age. During that time I have met, spoken to, worked with and taught many others who share this passion with me. Over this time I have been exposed to many ideas and thoughts about our industry/profession/hobby both positive and negative. At the start I was somewhat naive about photography and took photo's for the shear joy of it. Then I started freelancing and eventually had a profession which…

The trials of the Photo a Day challenge.

While I have been faithful in shooting a photo a day for around 870 days I have been neglecting my blog and sharing the photo's. Over the next four or five days I will share images I created over the past 5 weeks. Some day's the project is more trying then others and a lot depends on where I am at and how busy I am with my family. Still I try to keep my eyes open and to have at least my iPhone and it's camera available to me. Other times I use my Canon 7D and the various tools that I have…

IV bag. Roller Coaster Ride, Bag, Bags

Calgary's weather can be a real roller coaster ride no mater what time of year but late February and early March can be the most unpredictable. Today, after a week of nice weather, we had a nice dump of snow over night returning our fair city to a blanket of white. Since the temperature is still somewhat mild I decided to take a walk to explore the photographic opportunities. While I was on my way back to my car after my walk, a teacher and his students from a school near Edworthy Park…

An International Affair.

Today's post is a long one full of photo's and stories. This is due to the fact that we were traveling and attending my wife's nieces wedding. We also had another festival and a few stops along the way. But first to the wedding. It was truly an international affair as Ammu married Bruno on January 17. Both of them now live in Melbourne, Australia although Ammu's root's are here in India, while Bruno's family is of Chinese decent from Malaysia. Ammu's mom is Catholic while her dad is Hindu…

Turning the tables.

One of the most difficult things when traveling is to ask perfect strangers whom you can only communicate with a smile to allow you to take their photograph. This is one I struggle with and I admire those that can do it with such confidence and ease. Still I make the effort where I can and have been able to create a few nice portraits. Today though the tables where turned on me as I and my family visited Chavakkad beach close to our place in Thrissur. While we were walking the young man…

Photographing an Indian Catholic wedding.

We came to India to attend my wife's niece's wedding next Thursday. So it was a bit of a surprise when we were told yesterday that her 2nd cousin was getting married today just down the road. The big difference between the two are today's is a traditional Catholic ceremony while next weeks is a Hindu one. Now while people might be surprised that there are Catholics here in India, one only has to remember that St. Thomas came a shore here in Kerala (in fact we will be visiting a 2000+ year…

A bit of a shift in style.

I have noticed a tiny shift in style as I move forward in the New Year. In 2012 I did most of my shooting with the iPhone and then post processed using Snapseed. In doing so I found that I would use filters more freely as they seemed to suit the subject mater, style and the iPhone look. However since I have been in India and using my Canon 7D as the camera of choice I have found that I have had a shift in my thought process. Maybe it is due to the sharpness of the images from the DSLR that I…
