Swinging bridge over the Elbow River.

Trying to stay on the positive side.

I have been around the photography scene for about 40 years now having picked up the bug at a young age. During that time I have met, spoken to, worked with and taught many others who share this passion with me. Over this time I have been exposed to many ideas and thoughts about our industry/profession/hobby both positive and negative. At the start I was somewhat naive about photography and took photo's for the shear joy of it. Then I started freelancing and eventually had a profession which…

This past week has been a very eventful one for me. Besides the two classes I teach at SAIT I also taught Monday morning at the Kerby Senior Center and Thursday morning at the Forest Lawn Senior center. These are basic photography classes and due to the smaller groups I can work with them on areas that they want as questions arise. It is a lot of fun and I enjoy sharing with the students. I also will be doing some presentations for the Calgary Public Library on "Photographing Your Children"…

The trials of the Photo a Day challenge.

While I have been faithful in shooting a photo a day for around 870 days I have been neglecting my blog and sharing the photo's. Over the next four or five days I will share images I created over the past 5 weeks. Some day's the project is more trying then others and a lot depends on where I am at and how busy I am with my family. Still I try to keep my eyes open and to have at least my iPhone and it's camera available to me. Other times I use my Canon 7D and the various tools that I have…

Daily photo's, start of the catch up.

I again have not posted for a while and now I am in catch up mode. These photo's will bring me up to our departure for Florida. Tomorrows post will be about our family adventure. I hope you enjoy this series of photo's. June 17 Crayons in the classroom. June 18 The first two images were taken at Baker Park in the North West. Using the iPhone and the Hipstamatic app I was able to get these two interesting photo's. I then trained my eye on this Columbine flower in the front yard. We wrapped up…

August wraps up and soon we will be into fall. September is another chance for new beginnings as the students start a new school year and work gets back to normal after a summers rest. For me it will be about building something with in this photographic community that I love. The months ahead should be exciting as we wrap up 2013 and I fully plan to keep shooting a photo a day for as long as I can. I look forward to sharing some of the things I am doing over the next four months. For now…

St. Mary's Cathederal

On December 31, 2010 I began a journey to take a photo a day. At the time I did not know that I would stretch it out over more then 2 years to reach a total of 750 days that I have taken at least one photo. Yes there were days when I felt like packing it in, days where the struggle to be creative seamed insurmountable, days when the photo was taken in the last 1/2 hour of the day. Through it all I managed to make an image and on the whole I feel I have been fairly artistic in my efforts…

An alternative to Instagram?

I had an appointment with my eye surgeon. I have been seeing him for about 4 years as I have an optic nerve that has shifted and thus we are monitoring it with appointments every 6 months. Most of the time it is just different tests to check my field of vision and pressure, however today was one where they dilated my eyes for another exam. Everything seems to be stable and after the appointment I headed home. Fortunately it was an overcast day and wearing my sunglasses I had no problem with…
