There are many breakthroughs in science when it comes to space technology. From the first man on the moon to the first robot on Mars, history has come a long way in the machinery humans created to see more of the universe. Each of these sections will relate to a unit we've learned, including the scientific field it will correspond to. On this board, you will see pictures and videos about biology, chemistry, climate change, and optics, just to show you how giant of a leap mankind has made.

Although very advanced, spaceflight also has its downsides.  Space can affect the human body in harmful ways, and the ships astronauts live in cannot protect them from all of it.  One side effect of a prolonged stay in space is a lowered production of red blood cells, a specialized cell in the human body that delivers oxygen around the body.  Because of this, scientists are trying to find ways to advance this technology to make it even better.

If astronauts don't exercise properly, they can experience muscle atrophy and bone mass loss. A space biologist specializes in collecting data about how space and space travel affects living people and organisms, in scenarios such as living on the ISS.  Some experiments that space biologists perform is testing how organisms repair cells and tissue in space using specialized cells and how space can affect the entirety of a person's body, from a single cell to multiple organ systems and an entire organism itself.

This hardware machinery, called Spectrum, was created for the ISS.  These experiments are important because genes are how the organisms look and act the same, yet not the structure alone, which is what gravity and the environment is also for.  The tests will be used to gather data about what genes and cells are being used while in artificial environments.  Some specialized cells in these organisms will not be used because of the microgravity.

In rocket launches, a surplus of rocket fuel is used to get out of the atmosphere.  Rocket fuel emissions are made of carbon dioxide, water, carbon, alumina particles, and more things.  Alumina particles were found to warm the Earth by absorbing radiation.  Hydrogen can also cause large carbon emissions.  This would lessen the ozone layer, letting in more UV radiation and warming up the Earth.  This drawing was made by me.

Space rockets may not be very environmentally friendly.

Although no experiments have been made on the effects of the reentry of space junk, some scientists think it is a major concern to climate change.  Although the data satellites gather is very helpful for preventing climate change, after it has done its job, it can account to some of that as well.  Re-entry smoke particles are when the pieces of metal vaporize and may affect the chemical composition of the atmosphere.

This can cause harm to spacecraft, radio communication, alter navigation, positioning systems, and transmission.  Having a space climatologist helps because they can better predict future space storms.  With this, they can figure out what humanity can do to lessen the impact of these storms, and maybe even climate change.

Optical Spectroscope

An astrochemist's job is to collect data from comets, planets, and other interstellar objects to determine the chemical composition.  The samples taken are useful for understanding the form of the physical structure of the object.  Astrochemists can use this data to help find a sign of life on other planets.

The International Space Station is a large space shuttle that is in space, holding many astronauts and experiments that are done in the vacuum of space.  Since people reside in there, oxygen must also be at optimum levels.  The process of electrolysis is a good solution.  In doing this process, hydrogen and oxygen can be made from water.  The molecules from this will be able to react with each other and separate, reforming from H2O into O2 and H2.

The ISS

Life support systems on the International Space Stationprovide oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, and manage vaporous emissions from the Astronautsthemselves. It's all part of breathing easy in our new home in space.

Aboard the ISS, astronauts are making chemical gardens.  The crystal structures are inorganic, but are influenced by gravity when "growing".  The gardens are made with dissolvable metals and aqueous solutions that can contain elements like silicate, borate, phosphate, or carbonate.  Scientists use microscopes to see the relationship between the elements and the structures.

A space optics engineer is responsible for inventing and developing new equipment for experiments and space travel.  Optical engineers design, create, test, fix, and use optical devices like lenses and mirrors to find new data about the galaxy.  For this reason, they must also know how mirrors can be made to resist the harsh environment of the vacuum of space while also doing what it's supposed to.  With optical engineers, the development of telescopes has led to many discoveries.

Refracting telescopes are helpful for enlarging an object in the distance.  The telescopes take light and put it through different materials in order to make the speed of light either faster or slower.  Using this, they can make the image that the light is reflecting from bend to make it more clear.  They also utilize that light and condense it to make it more focused and larger. The Webb Space Telescope is large, with a diameter of 6.5 metres, hexagonal in shape, durable, flexible, and lightweight.  It is made of beryllium mirrors because it is light, strong, and durable in extreme heats and colds.  It was built and put in space to try and see galaxies up to 13 billion light-years away.  The making of the telescope allows it to have two mirrors, a bigger cocave one and a smaller convex one.
