The story of a twelve-year-old girl's harrowing experience fleeing Nazi-occupied Germany with her family and best friend, only to discover that the overseas asylum they had been promised is an illusion.

THE GERMAN GIRL by Armando Lucas Correa. The book tells two connected stories of loss. One is of "the German girl" Hannah who escapes 1939 Berlin to arrive in Cuba; the other is about Anna, Hannah's great niece, and her loss of her father in the World Trade Center tragedy. Anna, in search of her father's history, arrives in Cuba to discover the family story. I found the book often difficult to follow and jumpy between time periods. An interesting read with new perspectives on WWII emigrants.

The German Girl by Armando Lucas Correa - A stunningly ambitious and beautiful novel, perfect for fans of The Nightingale, Schindler’s List, and All the Light We.

This is one of the most unsettling books I’ve read this year, but despite being thoroughly creeped out, I couldn’t put it down even for a second. It’s narrated by the villain, which makes for a rather unnerving read.
