Gertrude Vanderbilt was born in New York City on January 9, 1875. She was the eldest surviving daughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt II (1843–1899) and Alice Claypoole Gwynne (1852–1934) and a great-granddaughter of "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt.  Gertrude Vanderbilt spent her summers in Newport, Rhode Island, at the family's mansion, The Breakers. At 21, she married Harry Paine Whitney, the Oil, tobacco and Banking Heir.

Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, Jr. (1912 – 1999) son of the first Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, who died in the sinking of the RMS Lusitania & Margaret Emerson (daughter of the Bromo-Seltzer inventor), one of America's wealthiest women. Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont (1958-1908) son of August Belmont, he was a socialite, financier and politician who married (11 Jan 1896) Mrs. Alva Vanderbilt, ex-wife of his friend Wm K. Vanderbilt. He previously married and divorced (both 1882) a pregnant Sara Swan Whiting. Their daughter Natica was adopted by her stepfather George Lockhart Rives. The divorced bachelor commissioned (c. 1890) Richard Morris Hunt to design Belcourt Castle, a 52-room Louis XIII style manor in Newport, RI.
