Manfred von Richthofen - German World War I Military Figure. He is best remembered as the famous "Red Baron" German fighter pilot and was the top ace of World War I with 80 combat aerial victories to his credit.
Alnwick War Memorial, Northumberland; is a Gde II listed bldg., with a triangular base with piers at corners & segmental moulded cornice. Three scroll brackets to plain Doric columns supporting an ornamental lamp holder. Each corner pier supports a bronze figure - soldier, sailor, airman (by R Hedley 1921) mourning with reversed 303 rifles. Two plaques inscribed with an impressively long list of those killed in the 1914-18 war and one to those in the 1939-45 war.
This summer, the Tower 2014 installation, conceived by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, will commemorate each and every British or Colonial fatality from World War 1 by planting 246 red ceramic poppies in a flowing sea around the tower.
