The Sioux gave up 28 million acres surrendered through treaties. They were left with 2 reservations for 7,000 Sioux 70 miles x 20 miles. Fur traders took first dip into Gov. money to pay for furs sold. Gov. money was always late. In 1862 the Sioux were starving to death and they could take no more broken promises.

An orphan born on a Winnebago reservation in Nebraska, Henry Roe Cloud 1884–1950, was the first Native American to earn a degree from Yale. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees there, and most significantly, according to the Yale press release, “devoted his life to promoting the self-identity and well-being of fellow American Indians.”
