Vitiligo (vit-ih-LIE-go) is a disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches. The extent and rate of color loss from vitiligo is unpredictable. The disorder affects all races and both sexes equally, however, it is more noticeable in people with dark skin.

Vitiligo is caused by a loss of pigment in the skin, due to destruction of pigment-forming cells known as melanocytes.
