Henry called Catherine Howard his "Rose Without a Thorn". Catherine married Henry VIII on 28 July 1540, at Oatlands Palace, in Surrey, almost immediately after the annulment of his marriage to Anne of Cleves was arranged. However, Catherine Howard was beheaded after less than two years of marriage to Henry on the grounds of treason for committing adultery while married to the King. Catherine was the third of Henry's consorts to have been a member of the English gentry.

In May 1510, Henry VIII is supposed to have strayed from the marital bed of Catherine of Aragon, taking as his partner Anne, Lady Hastings, a sister of Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham. Indeed, book after book confidently asserts that Anne was Henry’s mistress, at least for a short time.

Anne Hastings (née Stafford) (c. was the youngest daughter of Henry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham and his wife Catherine Woodville. In her affair with King Henry VIII was the subject of a scandal at court.

Henry VIII at age 45, just about a year after the previous portrait and around the time he had Anne Boleyn executed. (There seems to me to be a huge difference in Henry's demeanor when compared to the portrait made during his marriage. I often wonder what happened to him to change him so much...) He also married his third wife, Jane Seymour, at this time.
