Theodor Sproesser and Erwin RommelMajor Sproesser was Rommel’s commanding officer in Italy during WWI. He received his Pour Le Merite with Rommel for their daring and unrelenting pursuit of the Italians. Sproesser was promoted to Oberstleutnant on the 1st of March 1920 having entered the Reichsheer following the end of WW1. Promoted to Oberst on the 1st Feb 1922 he became the commandant of Glatz and retired as a Generalmajor on the 31st of March 1925. He died in 1932.

Interesting > "Death by Garrote" was the NAZI punishment for Treason. While Field Marshal Erwin Rommel wanted a Trial, in exchange for agreeing to a quick death by poison on October 14, 1944, Adolph Hitler would not tarnish his reputation nor retaliate against his wife and child.  Interestingly, if Rommel had demanded a trial, he might have survived. Germany surrendered barely 6 months later, VE-Day, May 8, 1945
