A different way to teach math. Use block, books and in some cases stuffed animals to teach math. Most kits support material in the collection. This is just a small sample of what we have in the Library. For more information visit our home page at http://library.queensu.ca/webtrc/ or come in and visit!
513.2 L39 "Base Ten Mathematics: Interludes for Every Math Text" Fifty basic activities that fit into any math program for grades 1-8, using "Base Ten Blocks", plastic cubes of 1 centimeter, weighing 1 gram each. Useful for teaching the metric system, certainly, but also addition, subtraction, etc. Great Support Material. Available for borrowing.
513 R46 "Real World Math" Grades 5-8 Guided practice and activity materials to help students relate their math skills to the problems they will encounter in adult life, such as personal budgeting, major purchases, figuring discounts, balancing a checkbook, etc. Available for borrowing.
513 M66 "Weaving mathematics through the curriculum using literature" Book units for: Simon and his boxes / Gilles Tibo -- Changes, changes / Pat Hutchins -- Shape space / Cathryn Falwell -- Mole's hill / Lois Ehlert -- My map book / Sara Fanelli. Activities, many using manipulatives, for teaching math concepts in relation to children's storybooks. Includes bibliographical references, for other children's books useful for similar lessons. Available for borrowing.
513.2 W35 "Mouse Count, Math Bag" Math bags contain materials designed to help children grasp the basics of math centered concepts. This kit teaches about counting. As ten mice outsmart a hungry snake. Includes plush mice and snake along with book. Available for borrowing.
513.211 M87 "Missing Mitten, Math Bag" Math bags contain materials designed to help children grasp the basics of math centered concepts. This kit teaches the concept of understanding odd and even numbers. As a farmer tries to find the correct number of mittens for his various farmyard animals, the reader is introduced to odd and even numbers. **Also have additional "Missing Mitten" in our easy read collection E KEL **
516 G47 "Geoblocks" **One of our most popular Math Kits** Blocks in various sizes representing the common solid geometric forms. One of multiple copies of this kit. We also have a wide range of sizes and support materials - See 516 G42 "Geoblock Jobcards" Available for borrowing.
516 G42 "Geoblock Job Cards" Provides children to investigate logical thinking, visual and spatial perception, geometric concepts and problem solving. The jobcards are pics of blocks arranged to make buildings. Students look at the cards and try to select the blocks shown & then build. As they work to make the buildings, they will use visual discrimination to select the blocks, learn about relationships between blocks & the relative sizes of the blocks. Great support for Geoblocks Kits.
513.2 P38 "getting Started with Patter Blocks" A small kit of manipulatives for early learning age students to support math concepts: shapes, colours as well as patterns, designs, and symmetry, classification, data collection/management, problem solving. Includes 1 teacher's guide (30 p.), 250 pattern blocks, 2 --8" x 6" mirrors, and 1 pattern block template in container. Available for borrowing as well as lots of support material.
513 "Attribute Blocks" This kit is a fun was to approach to the introduction of set theory. Children learn to distinguish, classify and match properties of objects. Available for borrowing. Also ask for additional support material.
