#GasWorksPark was turned into a Gas Plant in 1906 and polluted and illuminated #Seattle for 50 years. Eventually, a natural gas pipeline from Canada put them out of business and a park was created on this environmental misfortune.

The first #Seattle Gas Plant was built in 1870 on Elliot Bay. Soon after, a better way of making a cleaner gas was invented that required fresh water. Unfortunately for the Seattle Gas Light Company, Elliot Bay was salt water. There was pressure on the company to stay competitive since there was a rival gas company in town. So from 1900-1905, the Seattle Gas Light Company bought land on the north shore of the fresh waters of #LakeUnion - University of Washington, Special Collections, MAP118 Salt And Water, Fresh Water, Gas Work, Gas Pipeline, Gas Company, Lake Union, Gas Lights, Lighting Companies, University Of Washington

A #Seattle city council member named #MyrtleEdwards was a huge reason why this park was created. After she died in a car accident, the city named the park after her. However her family knew her disgust over leaving the ugly #GasWork Cracking Towers and refused to lend her name. So it just became Gas Works Park. Her name was instead passed to a park that hosts the #SeattleHempfest every year. Not to be out-debauched, Gas Works Park is witness to two naked bike races annually. A colossal tank that stored the gas resided where the parking lot is now. When the Gas Works Plant was turned into a park, it was destroyed along with most of the rest of the plant. The foundation rubble was repurposed to create the “Great Mound” that towers over the west side of the park today. Before the park was created, you actually could not see #LakeUnion, unless you were right on the shoreline. When the #FremontCut opened #LakeUnion to the #PugetSound, the world’s resources could now be shipped to the plant. So in the 1930s, when it was discovered that crude oil was a lot cheaper way than coal to create gas, the plant switched fuels. Ships from all over the world could deliver their “Black Gold” to the Gas Work’s dock. Steam powered the Gas Plant, so the boilers had to burn non-stop. That required a lot of timber. It is no coincidence that the #MontlakeCut, a canal to connect #LakeWashington and #LakeUnion, broke ground in 1905 and the #Seattle Gas Works moved to North Lake Union in 1906. As a large canal to Lake Washington ensured an almost unlimited supply of cheap wood. Politics stalled the construction for ten years. In the “Picnic Shelter”, two giant boilers burned non-stop for 50 years. Their steam was used to power the air compressors and pumps in the “Play Barn”. The compressors had 2 jobs. First, they extracted pure oxygen so the fire in the Cracking Towers could burn super hot. Second, they refined the gas before it was delivered to the customer, as any contaminant would cause a lamp to explode. The pumps were used to push the gas through the thousand miles of pipe that covered the Puget Sound… Gas Work, South Seattle, Seattle Neighborhoods, Gas Pipeline, Air Compressors, Lake Union, Green Lake, Virtual Tour, Towers
