ART: GROUP OF SEVEN

This was a group of landscape artists (1920-1933). Depending on who you read, it variously included Franklin Carmicheal, A. J. Casson, LeMoine Fitzgerald, Lawren Harris, Edwin Holgate, A. Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald, Tom Thomson, and Frederick Varley, and - some would argue - most certainly should have included Emily Carr. Why have I never before known about these painters? They are so important. I have a lot to learn.

Lawren S. Harris ~ 'Lake Superior III' Harris is also the only member of the Group who kept pushing his painting, never resting for long with one style or one species of subject matter. Long after the Group disbanded, Harris continued to grow and change as a painter, moving eventually into art deco and pure abstraction. He was also a talented ceramicist, and in 1922 he published a volume of poems.
