Elevator speech. Elevator statement. Elevator pitch. Why are we on an elevator all the time? The phrase came from the idea you need to figure out a way to explain what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different in the time it would take to ride an elevator. It's a short, compelling sales pitch. So, how do you write an elevator pitch?

I know, I get it. You HATE marketing. And talking about yourself? Yeah, I know. You hate talking about yourself too. But here's the thing, when you're self-employed you need marketing to get work and when you're a writer you need to market YOU in order to get clients. This is tough stuff, I know. But I hope this post will help you understand how to market yourself as a writer without being a sleaze-ball and maybe even learn how to talk about yourself in a way that doesn't feel weird or…

Over the past couple months I've tested Write! App to see if I could adjust to a distraction-free writing with a distraction-free text editor. And by test I should be upfront. I stared at the shortcut on my desktop and thought of reasons why I didn't need to use it. Because I'm a writer with a writing process and being distracted is integral to my creative process.

Priceless movie review. Dubbed a romantic drama, Priceless follows James Stevens (Grammy-award winning singer Joel Smallbone from For King and Country) on a red-eye delivery with a mysterious package. Sketchy. Stevens is troubled, complicated, and in over his head. He realises this once he hears crying coming from the back of his delivery truck. What are those girls doing back there? Now what does he do?

Blogging Year in Review

There's something about nature that calls to me and I don't know how to explain what happens when I go out in the woods except to say the trees and the air whisper to my soul. I don't know what they say but I always feel refreshed and renewed after a nature walk. Then once home from her wandering, she writes.

Portfolios. In general I understand them—a collection of your work assembled to demonstrate your experience and expertise in an area. But I've struggled with social media and figuring out how to create a social media portfolio. Because although it's my work it's not for me. Most of my social media experience is creating content and strategies for other people or brands. It's like ghostwriting. It's ghostsocialing. (I sure hope that's a hashtag.) My mission is to figure out how to present my…

Why are fonts such a big deal? I know they are but I don't "get" it. But I understand, at least, that it does matter. So I'm here to tell you fonts matter and I could try and tell you why but I'd only be plagiarizing because I don't understand it. Can we just agree they are important and move on to figuring out how to choose fonts when you know they matter but you can't tell what works and what doesn't. Also known as how to choose fonts for your website when you're not a designer.

If you're a writer then perhaps you know the term "pantser." It was new to me. Pantser is a type of writer; one who writes by the seat of his pants. Right? The other type of writer is an outliner. Now that one's a bit more familiar to me. In my heart I'm an outliner. I like having a plan and making it come alive. I like knowing where I'm going rather than discovering it along the way. And I don't believe outlines cut off creativity, which is why I'm advocating for outlines and showing you…

Released mid-September 2016, the buzz surrounding Searching the Scriptures intensified as the publish date crept closer. As an employee of Insight for Living Ministries (the Bible-teaching ministry of Charles R. Swindoll) I stalked my email in hopes of an advance preview of the book, which I heard was a game changer.

Searching the Scriptures is Chuck Swindoll's personal Bible-study method, which he has broken out into four easy-to-remember steps.

If you know anything about Canadian history you know the Canadian Pacific Railway company played a role in shaping it. Marc H. Choko's Canadian Pacific: Creating a Brand Building a Nation tells the story based on CP's publicity output--their marketing and graphic design in particular. It's a unique take on telling a brand story while educating readers on how public and private interests can align for the greater good. In this case, forming a unified Canada.

Laid out like any other writers guide, there are essays and articles on writing advice, publishing information, and an introduction to planet literary agent before getting to the good stuff. The listings. Who's buying, who's selling, who's looking for what and when. It's all good stuff, and I can't get enough. Jeff Herman has a wonderful sense of humour, which helps make typical writing and publishing advice come alive and keeps the reader engaged. The listings follow an interesting format…
