Paul Coffey's 48 goals by a defenseman is the best ever. The only two defensemen to score 40 or more goals in a season are Coffey and the man who revolutionized the position, Bobby Orr. Only one active defenseman has scored more than 30 in a year, the Capitals' Mike Green, who scored 31 in 2008-09. That was the only time he's cracked the 20-goal mark, let alone 30. So, 48 looks to be pretty safe for the time being.
