rzlbd > Instar House > main elevation > The evolution of design was based on a clear distinction between two main volumes which are both stretched east-west: a larger one in grey that contains all the served spaces; and a smaller replica in black that accommodates all the servant spaces. In order to maintain a sense of autonomy all the major glazed openings on the larger volume are connected and the exterior of this modest monolithic mass is rendered in seamless stucco.

rzlbd > Thorax House > Main elevation: Instead of making a visual splash, the exterior of this modest monolithic mass is rendered in grey stucco. Exceptions are two light-weight structures made of black aluminum as canopy and guard at the entry. The only accent is the red signage designed specifically for the house.
rzlbd > Thorax House > Staircase & Bridge: The evolution of design was a simple extraction form a thorax diagram: a two-party system on either sides of a core. Starting with the main circulation, the staircase and bridge (the spine) run up the middle of the square volume, and all the living spaces (lungs) are arranged symmetrically on both sides.
rzlbd > Thorax House > Main elevation: Thorax House is a minimalist two-storey wood structure that carefully responds to the needs and lifestyle of the client while it has not forgotten the basic logic, plan and simplicity of the bungalow it replaced: the new project sits exactly on the small foot-print of the one-and-a-half storey bungalow that had occupied the site.

rzlbd > Totem House > The exterior of the house is a monolithic charcoal brick mass. Two small blocks on the north and south facade of this perfect mass have been extracted and cladded with wood.
rzlbd > Totem House > The harmonious contrast of the charcoal brick and the wood with the immediate neighbours is tied to the surroundings with a humble design for the landscape allowing the neighbours to perfectly frame the house.
rzlbd > Totem House > Their kitchen could not be a typical urban kitchen, because they don’t have typical cooking habits. They passionately care for taste and they are minimal and chic. A gas burner cook-top with no hood on top was what they wanted to cook their food on. Except for the appliances everything is concealed behind the white cabinet doors that cover the wall from floor to ceiling.

rzlbd > Tetris House > We have all played the game “Tetris” at least once in our lives. For rzlbd Tetris is a quest of effective design. When a client demanded a program that seemed impossible to fit in a 40’ by 110’ lot, specially if one tries to respect a tight zoning for an infill project in a city like Toronto, rzlbd decided to practice the challenges of “no leftover space” with a simple rule in mind: every inch is a usable inch.
rzlbd > Tetris House > Lightwell
rzlbd > Tetris House > The light well that penetrates from the upper floor to the basement plugging into the living room with a glass-covered opening is an invisible Tetris element that helps bring a vertical light element into the house.

rzlbd > Gallery House > The Gallery House is a contemporary residential structure that adapts an institutional/commercial typology in that all of the spaces have been aligned and arranged along a galleria. One can imagine that all of the served and servant areas of the house have been plugged in to this empty spine. They then have been stretched out to the north and south where they gain exposures, views and natural light.
rzlbd > Gallery House > Spa
rzlbd > Gallery House > The gallery defines the spatial organization of the house and its circulation concept; it also guides the structural and mechanical schemes. In order to navigate between quarters, one does not need to invade another area of the house. Although the gallery generates a linear void, its emptiness is the very soul of the project.

rzlbd > Patio House > Being located in a corner lot, the building maintains a presentable façade for the residential street while controlling sun exposure from the west. This strategy has been achieved by inserting a dynamic series of linear windows in the white brick façade and extracting a box from the monolithic geometry to create the patio.
rzlbd > Patio House > On the ground floor a continuous airy space washed with natural light is divided into four public zones, which gradually become more private as it reaches the end of the house.
rzlbd > Patio House > A linear orange accent light on the ceiling responds to the orange tiles of the patio and the orange quartz backsplash of the kitchen decorating the interior of the house by emphasizing its continuous linear design and connection between the living room, the kitchen, and the family room.

rzlbd > Whale House > The exterior façade is designed with careful attention to the interior arrangement of the house. The vertical linear glazing corresponds to the levels and the main staircase, so when one descends the staircase the exterior views are never lost. The horizontal glazing on level one and two respond to the office and the loft respectively.
rzlbd > Whale House > Situated in Woodbine-Lumsden Neighborhood in Toronto, the lot shares a driveway with its neighbor forcing the architect to design the house even narrower than what zoning bylaw allows. The final design is a 15 feet wide three-storey wood structure that celebrates linearity and sectional revisions.

rzlbd > 5/6 House > In the same fashion as in a Rubik’s cube 5 out of 6 modules shift in every level to form the living spaces, and one is removed to allow for visual communication and natural light.

rzlbd > Charcoal House > The randomly patterned square windows on its façade and the hidden entrance door at the corner of the building are elements that not only make it difficult to associate the building with a single family house, but they also trick the eye to an extend where the scale of the house is distorted and one might not be able to guess the number of floors inside.

rzlbd > Shaft House > The two and a half storey detached house reevaluates functional arrangements within a narrow building while creating bright and airy spaces.
rzlbd > Shaft House > The Shaft House is an unexpected and exciting spatial experience that survives the limits of our ordinary living spaces.
rzlbd > Shaft House > The Shaft House generates spaces without walls. Circulation and services surround a void of light that is called “The Shaft”. Floors on either side overlook each other allowing light and sight to travel deep inside the house.

rzlbd > 63˚ House > The 63° angle of the main façade aligns the building with appropriate south light and together with the double height curtain wall contributes to a greenhouse situation.
