Nancy Ward, Cherokee name Nanye-Hiwas a Young bride when she was called upon to assist her husband during a battle with the Creeks. When her husband was shot and killed, she picked up his gun, continued the battle and led the Cherokee to victory. The Cherokee in turn made her a "Beloved Woman" Cherokee Names, Cherokee Woman, Cherokee Nation, Native American Women, Native Americans

Chief Bigfoot lies dead in the snow where he fell after the massacre at Wounded Knee. A severe snow storm hit shortly after the firing stopped. Three days passed before anyone went back to remove and bury the dead. All the bodies were frozen. Chief Bigfoot still held his rifle in this pose. It was removed just prior to the photo.
