Vancouver History: Wooden Coaster

It's where you can ride the Crazy Beach Party, visit Hell's Gate, or take a spin on the Enterprise without leaving Vancouver. The Fair at the PNE has returned for the 101st year and with it children young and old will enjoy carnival games, marketplace shopping, livestock exhibits, rides, cotton candy, and more sticky-gooey tasty delights. Over the years the rides have changed, we've added a few and lost many, but there's one that has been a mainstay and that's the wooden coaster. Roller…

All Lit Up

This is Burrard Bridge as viewed from the Granville harbor in Vancouver. I took this one summer evening while exploring the shops and sights of Granville market which is a must see when you go to Vancouver. In some ways this shot is a summary of the city, in the forefront are the boats, followed by the bridge, then behind that buildings of the city and finally all the way back are the mountains surrounding Vancouver. Of course there is a lot more to the city but this was my perspective at…

Goods Satisfactory or Money Refunded

"Consider again the Eaton's slogan: Goods Satisfactory or Money Refunded. It said nothing about prices, low or otherwise. It simply promised Timothy Eaton's Irish Protestant common sense: satisfaction or your money back. Customers believed it." (John J. Wells, The Hamilton Spectator) When Timothy Eaton's store opened for business on Queen Street in Toronto, no one had ever heard of the slogan "Goods Satisfactory or Money Refunded". People were used to haggling when they bought goods. They…

Surprisingly, just about everything remains from the old photo, except of course, for the former bank building on the corner closest to the camera. That space is now occupied by a restaurant. This is looking north down Granville.

Lions Gate Bridge, North End - 1949/2010

The toll for the bridge was originally 25 cents per car but was dropped in 1963. This shows the North Shore side of the bridge and the Art Deco-ish structure on the right is still there. The now photo was taken very early in the morning on the weekend which is why there is no traffic, but this is one of Vancouver's busiest roads during the day. Cars wanting to cross to get into Vancouver usually have long queues when the lane reversal is for the other direction and you have four lanes…
