"And at last I see the light"~ The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival

I'm going to be totally upfront. I am SO disappointed with some of these photos. It was crowded, rainy, and gross out. I had to turn my on-camera flash on for a couple photos. I had to give my camera to someone who didn't speak English (that I know of) so we could have a photo with out lantern and it's terrible. But you know what? At least I have them. Chase Jarvis said "the best camera is the one you have with you." Being in Taiwan, I've had to take that to heart as often I don't have our…

You asked, we (hopefully) answered! A little Q&A about life in Taiwan

WHERE is Taiwan? Taiwan is that little Island off the coast of China, below Japan and Korea and above the Phillipines. We are not IN China, and we are not Thailand. How far away is Taiwan from Canada? Expect to travel for a full day. Only you’ll cross an international date line and go 3 hours back in time when you hit Vancouver, then sit on a plane for another 14 to Hong Kong and cross another line which will propel you 12 (or 13) hours in the future. When you arrive in Taiwan your body…

July Recap

How long we’ve been here: 9 months 21 days or 281 days in total Favourite thing to eat: Dave: This is always tough to answer each month because I work in a Taiwanese kitchen 3 nights a week and also am the Chef at BUS7 Café I sample many different foods every day. I guess the month of July would be a toss up between roasted duck(Bejing Peeking Style) or Taiwanese Sausage. The Taiwan sausages are very different than what we make back at the Burt Farm Butchershop. Maybe I will get a chance to…

2013 Photo Recap

Last year I did a full recap of my favourite photos from the entire year. In the hubub of moving and settling and training and getting used to a new culture, job and life I didn't post one in January. Lately I've regretted it, and since I believe in better late then never, here it is!! #15. My baby sister rarely lets me photograph her (which I think is a shame because she's so pretty!), but I was able to sneak this one in one day when we visited the barn kitties! #14. Guests (or mother and…

On Dragon Boats.

Back home in Canada we have annual Dragon Boat races as a charity opportunity. I've never actually been in a boat, but it looks like fun! The story goes that a local poet and cadet minister of the Chu Royal House Qu Yan was banished for treason. In despair over having his home captured by rebel forces, he tried to commit suicide by throwing himself into a river. The village people who admired him raced onto the river to try to save him or at least his body. They also threw sticky rice…

On anniversaries- US!!

Happy Fifth anniversary to us!! Let's take a little walk down Memory Lane, shall we? I had JUST gotten back to the Soo after Reading Break. I'm pretty sure I'm wearing two sweater instead of wearing a jacket. Why? I have no idea. 'Fishing' trip with Josh and Tash and Dave's parents. The START of the standing-in-hearts photos. Thanksgiving '08, a couple days before we got engaged. Also, the day I managed to impale myself with a piece of wire while climbing. Christmas '08. At our stag and doe…

On Monkeys and Mountains

When Dave and I moved to Taiwan, we made a (rather short) list of things we wanted to see. On that list was Monkey Mountain in Kaohsiung. Little did we know there was one just outside Tainan city! The Wushan Taiwan Macaque Natural Reserve is called "Houzihshan" (Monkey Mountain) or Wufonshan (Five-Peak Mountain), and is between Tainan and Kaohsiung City. Apparently there are over 200 macaque monkeys on the mountain- we saw tons of babies so I believe it! Right before we saw the monkeys! (A…

On hope.

Today, I am filled with hope. I am hopeful for our one-day babies, whether they grow in me or another woman. I am hopeful for my babies now- the ones I teach so much more than just English. I am hopeful for our friends back home- whatever stage of life they're in. The ones who are married and childless, the new moms and dads, the students, the 'I'm still figuring out what I'm doing with my life' and the 'I've got this' ones. I am hopeful that when our time comes to leave Taiwan I will feel…

A little salt of the earth...

Our 'to see' list started out pretty small. After we arrived, though, it kept growing. Watching 'Fun Taiwan' (seriously, check it out, it's an absolutely fantastic show about things to do and see in Taiwan!), listening to my coworkers chat about things they had done or seen, and doing some research ourselves really gave us some good reasons to explore this island! This stop: the salt museum, salt mountain and salt fields Yes, it's shaped like a pyramid of salt. "First, dry the salt soil…

Happy Easter... with love from Taiwan!!

This was meant to be a quick video telling you all how much we love you and wishing you a Happy Easter miles away from home. But I'd rather just tell you about Easter in Taiwan... This is officially our second Western holiday abroad. Christmas was a little depressing as we'd been away for a couple months already, and were just starting to settle in. Plus, I (Steph) was so sick I spent most of Christmas and Boxing Day in bed. The Taiwanese also don't make as much of a fuss over Western…

On When the Sawyers visited Taiwan... Part I- Taipei

Even though it's actually only been about a month since our friends Candice and Tyler left, it sometimes feels more like we dreamt they were here than it actually happened. They have been a HUGE blessing to our lives since we met, and we have one of those amazing relationships where we can hang out either as a group or split up and do boy things and girl things and no one feels left out. I still sometimes can't believe they flew all the way here just to visit. They are amazing. We toured…
