Gullah Slaves brought to South Carolina and Georgia during the 1700's unwittingly brought diseases such as malaria and yellow fever with them. These diseases thrived in the swampy region of the Lowcountry. While many of the Gullah people were resistant to these diseases, the white planters were not. As such, masters of the plantations moved their homes and families away from the rice fields. This isolation allowed their African culture to remain relatively intact.

Turner published his classic work Africanisms in the Gullah Dialect in 1949, making an immediate impact on established academic thinking. His study of the origin, development and structure of Gullah was so convincing that scholars quickly accepted his thesis that GULLAH IS STRONGLY INFLUENCED BY AFRICAN LANGUAGES. Many scholars have followed Turner over the years in researching the AFRICAN ROOTS OF GULLAH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE.

Dr. Matilda Arabelle Evans, black healthcare advocate, was born in Aiken, South Carolina in 1872. In 1922 Evans became the only black woman in the country to serve as the president of a state medical association when she became president of South Carolina's Palmetto M.A. She also served as a regional Vice President of the National Medical Association and established the Negro Health Journal of South Carolina. Lorenzo Dow Turner (8/21/1890 - 2/10/1973) was known for his research of the Gullah language of coastal South Carolina and Georgia, tracing it to its African roots in what is now Sierra Leone. He held an MA from Harvard and PhD from the University of Chicago, and taught English at Howard, Roosevelt University (Chicago), and Fisk, where he founded the African Studies Dept.
