1988 Stanley Cup Champions: Edmonton Oilers

Members of the Edmonton Oilers Bill Ranford, Esa Tikkanen, Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky and Kevin Lowe celebrate after defeating the Bruins for the 1988 Stanley Cup championship.

Paul Coffey's 48 goals by a defenseman is the best ever. The only two defensemen to score 40 or more goals in a season are Coffey and the man who revolutionized the position, Bobby Orr. Only one active defenseman has scored more than 30 in a year, the Capitals' Mike Green, who scored 31 in 2008-09. That was the only time he's cracked the 20-goal mark, let alone 30. So, 48 looks to be pretty safe for the time being.
