25 Ways to Teach Sight Words!

I'm going to share with you some fun and engaging ways to teach sight words. I mentioned in this post, that I LOVE teaching sight words!! There are numerous reasons, but one of them is the essential fact that learning sight words is just a hop, skip and a jump away from reading fluently! Edward William Dolch, in 1948, created a list of words that he believed to be essential for all students to learn first! Many teachers have found this to be true. Unfortunately, not all words can be sounded…

Sight Words

You can download this poster {here} In our district we use Zeno words. In first grade, we give our students 5 sight words a week to memorize and practice at home. Then, at school each day, we practice those words! I LOVE my sight word chants that I got from Kathleen at Growing Kinders. You can grab those for free {here}. Each stick {mine are actually not on sticks, I was too lazy} has a little way for the students to practice their words. For instance, the volcano is when the students start…

I Spy Sight Words Reading Activity with a FREEBIE - Clever Classroom Blog

I believe that the acquisition of reading skills and strategies can be strengthened by the notion that children should read anything and everything. I know from experience that a print rich environment is important for the emergent reader but providing them with a varied source of written language will set them up to achieve also. […]

The First Grade Parade

I just heard this on the radio and thought it was really neat. Of course, I’m sure I’m the LAST person to have heard this useless trivia, but what the hay… There are 4 dates this year that all share the same numbers… 1/1/11….1/11/11…11/1/11…11/11/11 Well, did you know that if you take the last two digits of your birth year & add them to the age you’re turning this year, you’ll get 111?!?! Is that numerical magic or what?! Try it for yourself and see!!! My birth year is 79 {whoa} and I’m…

Dans ma salle de classe...

In grade 1, we have been learning about classroom objects. I read this book to them: After having read it to them many times over the past few weeks, they are familiar with the pattern in the book. When I read it, I have them count the objects with me, and also repeat the object after me: "Dans ma salle de classe il y a 6 livres. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 livres". When I pulled small groups during these past few weeks, I practiced the classroom vocabulary with them using different games. Here is "bug…

French story writing ideas/Conversation prompts

I like to have something available to help my students get started with their writing, so I made this. It has different cards for person, place, and thing. They can pull them at random, or they can flip through for ideas that they like. You can also use it to help start oral conversations in class, to get your students talking about new things. Here is the French version - and the English version.
