Ranching began in the BC interior in the late 1850s, and was encouraged by markets created by the gold rushes. Livestock was brought in from the western US to the mild, sheltered Cariboo and Chilcotin areas and the Thompson and Nicola river valleys. Ranching expanded quickly into other British Columbia valleys, the Rocky Mt foothills and eventually into the semiarid plains of southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan.

This brings back memories of moving cattle from Northlake Farm ( Priddis) to the Sarsi Reservation in the early s . Greatest time of my youth !
