Notice and Note (Part Two)

As I mentioned before, over the summer I read the book, Notice and Note (Beers & Probst), and I decided that I am going to use their strategies for getting kids to dig deeper into text, or "close reading." (Just an aside, I can't be the only teacher who is slightly offended that "close reading" has suddenly become a "thing," can I? I mean seriously!? All this recent hubbub surrounding "close reading" seems to imply that the powers that be who make up school stuff - like standards, and tests…

Stop! Notice & Note

Over the summer, I attended a Common Core conference with Understanding by Design guru, Grant Wiggins. (He is reallllllly smart! I wish I could have a conversation with him one-on-one and pick his brain!) One of the sessions I attended was about how to get students better at close reading and the speaker mentioned a book by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst, Notice & Note. The book was ordered and waiting on the shelf to be read! Seriously, it was probably fifth on my to-read list this summer…

Beginning to Close Read {Notice and Note}

Like many of you, my district is transitioning to Common Core this year. The past two years we have heard rumblings of it, but full implementation has now completely begun. With this transition comes many "new" ideas that are getting a lot of attention, one of them being "close reading." Now, I would love to say that of course I have been teaching close reading all along. My students regularly read for evidence of questions that I pose, scouring the text to find the answer that I am seeking…
