Vancouver Police have patrolled the waters off Vancouver since 1911. In a city that boasts nearly 100 miles of shoreline and with dozens of marinas, the VPD Marine Unit patrol vessels are kept busy year-round.
The RG McBeath was named for a Vancouver Police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1922. McBeath was only 16 when he left his Scottish village to join the Seaforth Highlanders Regiment. He came to Canada three years later as a decorated war hero and began his short career with the VPD. While attempting to stop a drunk driver, McBeath was shot through the heart.
