Future Arteest

I'm trying to get those creative juices flowing early - not sure if I'm helping or deterring, but I certainly have fun! As I discovered in our art session this evening, she is not yet as enthusiastic about painting as her mommy, but we made it work. Most is hers, but I did my part to make sure the tape effect turned out as I had imagined. This project required: a 2-pack of 11x14 canvas tape (Andy used to do auto pinstriping so I chose a thickness from his stash) gesso crayola paints sponge…

Charcoal and Pastel Owls

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to have 2 bonus class periods with my 6th graders while my current middle school group (8th grade) was in Washington, D.C. for the annual 7th/8th grade travel week. Because I hadn't had my 6's in a couple of months, and I only had a little over 1 hour of usable art making time with them, I knew I needed a project that would get them excited and keep them on task so that we would have finished pieces of art at the end of our time together. I decided that…

7th grade 3D- Romero Britto Animal Sculpture

7th grade 3-D students finished up their clay cupcakes and were eager to begin their next project. We looked at the artwork of pop artist, Romero Britto. Britto is a painter and sculptor from Brazil who creates light-hearted, happy artwork using simple shapes, bright colors and lots of patterns. He took inspiration from Matisse and Picasso. Students looked at his artwork of animals and decided to create their own animal sculpture. Using Styrofoam, they created large shapes for the body. They…

Introducing the Staff

Every Good Boy Does Fine Memorize it. Got it? Good... here's your quiz. BORING!!! Leaning the names of the lines and spaces on the staff doesn't have to put your students to sleep. There are tons of songs, video clips, games, and tools that can make it easy to remember those pesky seven letters. Here are three of my favorites: 1. Quaver's Marvelous World of Music starring Guido De Arezzo (aka Chip the Monk) Quaver's Marvelous World of Music (QMWOM) is a new music curriculum using very…

Stomp Display

I do not usually have very much student work to display since my students' "work" happens during our class performances. However, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to show off the 4th and 5th grade Stomp Projects. Each group completed a worksheet to show the rhythms they chose, the instruments they played, and an explanation of their performance. The students really enjoy finding their group's work in the display and checking out all of the pictures! Update: After many requests, I have…
