Winnipeg native, Nia Vardalos' most notable work was based on her experiences growing up in an eccentric Greek family. She attended Shaftesbury H.S. in the Tuxedo area and began her acting career at the Rainbow Stage. After years with Second City, Nia moved to L.A. and wrote a 1-woman play called My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It caught the eye of Rita Wilson, wife of Tom Hanks and the rest is history. Nia has an adopted daughter and is a huge adoption advocate. She wrote the book Instant Mom.

The free app allows users create playlists from YouTube and stream music instead of downloading it. It has been called "revolutionary". Since it's launch in February, Musi has streamed over 5 million songs and has received tons of press coverage. What's next for these Winnipeg Kids? Winnipeg native, Jonathan Toews, had the city in ecstasy when he brought home the Stanley Cup, but the young Blackhawk captain started his hockey career modestly – in his backyard in the Peg on a rink lovingly prepared by his dad. Now he's a household name. He won the Stanley Cup in 2010, became the 4th youngest captain in NHL history at 20, won an Olympic gold in 2010 with Team Canada and, to top if off, he has a Community Centre in St. Vital and a lake north of Flin Flon named after him. From one Winnipeg TV station in 1975 it grew to encompass Global TV, the National Post and over 60 other newspapers. Izzy donated to arts, education and healthcare/research. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1995 and in 2000 the faculty of management at U of M renamed itself the Asper School of Business. Izzy passed away in 2003. His 12-season, nearly 900-episode show, Fred Penner's Place, had kids singing along from 1985 to 1997. Many of today's parents grew up watching him crawl through his iconic hollow log. He is a two-time Juno award winner, four-time recipient of the Parent Choice Awards, a recipient of the Order of Canada, a devoted dad, and my own personal childhood guru.
