Miss Kate Chase was the daughter of Lincoln's Treasury Secretary, Salmon P. Chase, and a tireless campaigner for her father's presidential aspirations. An "imperious beauty," she was the leading belle of Washington City, and drove Mary Lincoln to jealous rages with her insults and wit.
